Real Betis - FC Barcelona 1-2

FC Barcelona maintain their six-point lead on Atletico Madrid in the Spanish League after winning their Sunday night match against a strong Real Betis in Sevilla. A mixture of luck and the skills of Messi helped Barca win what was at times, a difficult match to win. The incomparable Lionel Messi, who was included in the team after having recovered from his light injury to the knee, saved his team by scoring two goals. The 25 year old Argentine international has now scored a total of 86 goals in all competitions, surpassing Gerd Müller’s record, which Gerd has kept for many years. Puyol was back in the starting line-up, meaning Javier Mascherano had to pay the price and sit on the bench.

Lionel Messi played an aggressive match from the kick off. Assisted by Iniesta, Messi was able to create enough space to shoot and score his 85th goal of 2012. Barcelona started to control the game after Messi put them into a one goal lead against Real Betis. A few minutes after Messi scored his opening goal; he doubled Barcelona’s lead and scored his second goal, making him the new record holder.

Before the end of the first half, Ruben Castro slipped past the Catalan defense and shot the ball past Victor Valdes, which set the score at 1-2. Real Betis continued pressuring Barca; however Barcelona managed to hold on to the 2-1 lead at the break. No matter how hard they tried, Real Betis could not get past the Barcelona defense in the final minutes of the second half. The score remained the same as the referee blew the final whistle.
